Box Sash Window Restoration Procedure for Victorian Style Window Sashes

The Victorian style box sash windows are so popular in the 19th century, and up until today, a lot of homeowners would still choose to have these types of windows at home. They look really charming especially when matched with durable timber doors. If you have some old timber sash windows at home and you want to bring back its charm, the best solution for this is to restore the window. Although there are several companies these days that you can hire for the job, you can actually do the process on your own. So here are the steps to guide you with the box sash window restoration procedure.

1.       First of all, remove the old box sash windows entirely. Begin with the lower sash and then remove the rest of the components of the window afterwards.

2.       Next, test the counterweight ropes, making sure that they are able to pull smoothly on the pulleys in the side jambs of the box sash windows. You must be able to feel slight resistance when you pull down the ropes as well as the weight lifts.

3.       Untie any of the broken ropes from the weights and then pull the nails from the back of the trim using pliers. Afterwards, realign the trim along with the window frame and then reattach it using a finish nail on every six to eight inches.

4.       When doing the box sash window restoration project, make sure that you sand the old paint from the window sashes using a sand paper. This is to make the finish look new and to make it appear smoother. Do not forget to sand even the details on the edges of the windows and when you are done, apply about two coats of latex paint. Work in one straight stroke so the paint will look good on your newly restored box sash windows. Allow it to be dried before you go on to the next step.

5.       When the paint is totally dry, reattach the rope to the upper sash and then secure it in place. Slowly tap the separator stop on its groove along the window jamb. After that, reattach the lower sash and secure it in place. The next step is to realign the inside stop and make sure that you nail it in place using a nail in about six inches apart from each other. To finish up, fill in the nail holes with a painter’s caulk and then apply two coats of paint on both the outside and inside portion of the frame.

So that is how the procedure for the restoration project of the box sash window is done. Do not forget to install the timber doors when you are done restoring the windows.
